Dressmaker Pattern Alignment: Grain and Print Direction

The quick answer

Rotate the paper pattern until its grain indicator is green and close to 100%, then check the print separately. A reversed pattern can still show 100% while placing a directional print upside down.

Steam release; grain weights are compiler-reported for build 25482629. Some patterns permit bias alignment.

Read the grain indicator

Place a paper pattern on the fabric. Look for the black double-arrow line and the grain-quality indicator. Rotate using the white circle or the pattern edge until the arrows turn green and the reading is close to 100%. The scroll wheel can also rotate, but may be less precise.

Build 410 fixed an unwanted rotation when scrolling over inventory. If that behaviour appears, check your game build before assuming it is part of normal placement.

Check the print after grain

Grain and print direction answer different questions. With a clearly directional print, keep the top of every piece in the same skirt group pointing the same way. A Mermaid skirt’s narrow end is its top and its flared end is its bottom; do not generalise that shape rule to every ruffled pattern.

Rotating a pattern by 180 degrees may retain 100% grain while reversing a print. It can save fabric, but inspect the assembled dress before deciding that the result is acceptable.

Make the trade-off deliberately

Angling a pattern to show more of a gradient can lower grain quality. For commissions, meet the card’s requirements first. Free ready-to-wear designs allow more aesthetic choice.

The published model weights grain at 30% for customer dresses and 40% for the no-customer branch. It also distinguishes patterns that permit bias; do not prescribe one fixed angle for all pieces.

There is no direct finished-piece indicator identifying which piece is off-grain. Keep useful fabric remnants while checking, and recut only the piece you need to correct.
