Dressmaker Quality Guide: Fit, Grain and Sewing

The quick answer

Improve Quality by checking fit, grain alignment and sewing accuracy. Professional, Glamour and other style scores are separate; accessories cannot replace correcting these three quality inputs.

Formula reported by a data compiler for Steam build 25482629. It is a versioned model, not a guarantee for every later build.

Quality and style are different

Quality describes construction. Professional, Elegant, Glamour and the other style attributes describe the design. Raising a style score does not fix a badly aligned or inaccurately sewn piece.

The published data compilation gives these rounded Quality calculations:

Dress branch Grain Fit Sewing accuracy
Customer dress 30% 20% 50%
Dress without a customer 40% Not counted 60%

For a customer dress, the model is round(grain × 0.30 + fit × 0.20 + sewing × 0.50). For the no-customer branch, it is round(grain × 0.40 + sewing × 0.60). These are compiler-reported weights for build 25482629; the original game code was not tested here. Build 410’s published notes do not announce a formula change.

Check the likely weak point

  1. Fit: compare the customer record and mannequin measurements. If they differ, return to the sketchbook and restart this design with the mannequin correctly adjusted.
  2. Grain: check the double-arrow and horizontal grain indicator while laying out each paper pattern. A 100% reading concerns grain, not whether a print is upside down.
  3. Sewing: check each piece’s accuracy. Sewing has the largest weight in the reported customer model.

The starting Quality value of 20 used in a player tutorial is a fit checkpoint, rather than a separate formula or a substitute for reading the mannequin dimensions.

Repair the piece that needs it

  • For the piece currently being sewn, press R to restart it.
  • For a completed seam, remove the piece from the mannequin with the Seam Ripper, return it to inventory and sew it again.
  • For an off-grain piece, take it to the cutting table and use the lower-right recycling basket to recover fabric and the paper pattern before recutting. Check what actually returns; recovery after discarding related leftovers is not established here.

The developer says the game does not directly identify which finished piece is off-grain. Retained holes in a fabric roll can help comparison, though similar pieces are difficult to distinguish. Avoid discarding useful remnants while investigating.

Check the commission’s final Quality requirement after repairs. Expensive accessories, a new thread colour or Sewing Assist should not be treated as guaranteed substitutes for accurate construction.
